MHT12 - Mystery History Theater; The Hit on Abe series

In the final episode of The Hit on Abe, Booth hopscotches through the Northeast, Quebec, the Caribbean and obtains a passport through the British Consulate in San Francisco, having “appropriated” the identity of British immigrant John B. Wilkes, then of Terre Haute, Indiana.

Three women recount the time they spent with Booth after his “death.” Booth’s reputed wife Izola is aided by another “dead” man in her efforts to join Booth in San Francisco.

Booth’s treachery knows no bounds as he cuts Izola adrift on the Pacific from the ship he commissioned to take them to India. She survives.

Years later, Booth as Wilkes returns to the United States for a brief time with his last wife, the former Elizabeth Marshall Burnley of England. After Booth’s death, she writes a series of letters importuning U.S. Grant—whom she had met in 1877in India during his post-Presidential global tour—to release Booth’s frozen assets for a dispersal among her, her daughters, three other women and the children they bore him.

Booth, as John B. Wilkes, “believing death to be imminent,” executes his will, Sept. 12, 1883, in Bombay, India, and is buried in Guwahati. The will is certified and probated in the U.S. and its instructions followed. The real John B. Wilkes, formerly of Sheffield, England, dies in Terre Haute in 1912.

MHT09 - Mystery History Theater; The Hit on Abe series

“Up to the Turn of a Doorknob”

After an almost comical number of failures to kidnap Lincoln, John Wilkes Booth’s Flying Circus falls apart, but now, it’s not about kidnapping anymore. It’s about murder in the worst degree.

A soldier thinks he hears Booth talking to a co-conspirator about Lincoln leaving Ford’s Theater during the play’s second intermission, but dismisses it. Lincoln’s body guard Ward Lamon is in Richmond on business for his President. John Parker, the “special policeman” guarding Lincoln, leaves his post to grab a beer with Lincoln’s coachman and footman. The third act begins and Booth downs a shot of courage in Taltuvull’s Star Saloon, then slips next door into the theater and clandestinely makes his way to Lincoln’s box.

At about the same time, off Lafayette Park, an injured, bedridden Secretary of State William Seward is attacked by a person or persons unknown in a confused frenzy, the account of which--to this day--has never been satisfactorily explained. Can the key to the mystery be found in the Seward Family's closet of skeletons?

MHT05 - Mystery History Theater; The Hit on Abe series

This episode was originally posted by Vyzygoth on his Alembic Files site in February 2015.

Lafayette Baker’s accusation that Secretary of War Stanton led the conspiracy to whack Lincoln. Those in deep with Stanton numbered politicians, army and naval officers, prominent bankers, newspaper reporters and assorted civilians.

Baker rightfully fears his own assassination. A nineteenth-century hitman facilitates the faked death and release of a convicted conspirator jailed in Fort Jefferson on the Dry Tortugas. He is also present at three suspicious deaths—one of which is Baker’s. He loses the trail of the released conspirator, who assists Booth’s wife in getting to San Francisco with a cache of gold and silver for a rendezvous with a man named John Byron Wilkes and a watery passage to India.

MHT04 - Mystery History Theater; The Hit on Abe series

This episode was originally posted by Vyzygoth on his Alembic Files site in January 2015.

What’s being scrutinized in this audio is an article--"Did Stanton Plan Lincoln's Murder?"--that appeared in Civil War Times, the August 1961 issue, Vol. 3 No. 5, in which then-editor Robert H. Fowler relates the findings of Ray Neff, one of the co-authors of “Dark Union,” with regard to Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton’s possible involvement in the murder of Abraham Lincoln.

Neff relies heavily on National Detective Police head Lafayette C. Baker’s revelations written in cipher as to the personages behind the assassination. Baker thought himself a target of the henchmen (the clean-up crew) most likely serving at the behest of high-placed Northern power brokers.

Unfortunately, Baker was correct, as his demise added to the curious body count of those with inside knowledge of the circumstances and principals in and around the killing of the President.

Sound familiar?

AFP25 - Anti-Federalist Papers - Part 25

In the final episode of AFP, Cato's final Letter (No. 7) mentions the Senate's close ties to the Presidency; that conflicts of interest will rear their heads and render impotent any checks and balances applying to treaties and impeachments.

Cato is also concerned that the new Congress will have control over the circumstances of their own elections. As a result of this, through manipulation there will be limits to its subserviency to the people.

Cato provides historical examples of the dangers of fully enabling politicians and bureaucrats to positions of authority.

He warns that caution should be the rule when entrusting any government with power.

Cato is concerned that the new government will travel down a similar road in time, and asks his countrymen to consider the implications.

AFP24 - Anti-Federalist Papers - Part 24

Cato uses his Letter No. 6 to speak to the "Three-Fifth Rule" regarding the apportionment of representation to - and concomitant participation of - women, children and Indigenous Americans in states practicing slavery.

While it could be argued that Cato's concern is misplaced in a pre-suffrage era, he accurately warns that parasitic politicians will load up the people’s labors and assets with ruinous levies and tributes. Cato asserts that elites will employ every effort to transfer burdens to the people.

He avers that the new government will have no real checks and balances under the proposed Constitution.

Cato is concerned that the new government will be a costly affair, will use its new-found wealth to leverage its will, and construct a hierarchy of privilege among the political class.

With great prescience, Cato further cautions about taxes, overseas conscriptions to satisfy the power-hungry, and the Senate’s unaccountable oversight of treaties.

AFP23 - Anti-Federalist Papers - Part 23

In Letter No. 5, Cato talks about the separate functions of the proposed government; that the distinctions between their enumerated duties will become blurred and therefore ineffectual.

He asserts that this inadequacy will result in danger to the people's liberty.

He makes an obvious, though profound, argument that while the citizenry is embarking on a new course, Americans are every bit as vulnerable to the whims of human nature as the peoples of other lands.

He argues that the small size of the new Congress will not provide for adequate representation for every demographic.

AFP22 - Anti-Federalist Papers - Part 22

In Letter No. 4, Cato looks far over the horizon. He expresses his concern that not only is the term of the President excessive in length, its position is monarchical in all but name.

Cato lists the characteristics that could be possessed by an unscrupulous individual. He points to the partnership between the Vice President and the Senate and urges retrospection.

Cato argues, in no uncertain terms, that the President's cabinet will be little more than a collection of willing lackeys and factions, eager to help the Chief Executive carry out his agenda.

Cato concludes by warning that the States - and by extension,
the People - should be the ultimate authority in the Confederation.

He alludes to the recent Shays' Rebellion in Massachusetts.

Cato contrasts the climate, temperaments and motivations of the Northern and Southern states.

Cato likens the psychology of the citizenry to an example of basic physics.

AFP20 - Anti-Federalist Papers - Part 20

Cato's Letter No. 2 speaks to the Founders' usurping their authority. Right out of the bag, they lied to their countrymen. They were not sent to Philadelphia to replace the Articles of Confederation, but to amend and consequently strengthen them!

Cato takes issue with one Caesar, who is attempting to insult and browbeat the people into buying a bill of goods.

Cato claims that The Articles are serviceable, notwithstanding the arguments of the Founders. Cato is worried that the Framers are more conquerors than liberators, and tells his fellow Americans to be on the lookout for attempted deceptions.

AFP19 - Anti-Federalist Papers - Part 19

In school we heard so much of the Federalist Papers. But what of the Anti-Federalists, who were far more prolific - and prescient?

Eric reads from the book "The Anti-Federalists," edited by Bruce Frohnen, and forwarded by Joseph Sobran.

Cato, a prominent Anti-Federalist (and believed by many to be New York Governor George Clinton), wrote letters that appeared in the New York Journal in late 1787 through early 1788. His pseudonym was borrowed from Marcus Portius Cato, a Roman statesman, speaker, and defender of the Roman Republic.

Cato's letters, although not considered by historians to be the most eloquently argued or logically presented Anti-Federalist missives, capture well the sentiments of those warning against the new Constitution.

Cato warns that that same Constitution will allow avarice to grow unchecked; that it will provide unbridled opportunities for the moneyed elites to deceive and subjugate the people. Cato avers that the gritty, painful struggle to loosen Britain's hold on the Colonies was very costly and should be prized.

In his brief Letter No. 1, Cato urges his fellow citizens to keep fresh their memories of their bloody conflict. He implores them to not hurry their decisions regarding a new government. He asks them: Will they act cautiously and ensure a safe and secure future for themselves?

AFP18 - Anti-Federalist Papers - Part 18

In his fiery final essay, Centinel lays bare the attempts of the Founders and their tools to stifle dissent. They are hindering communications between those concerned about the new Constitution. Because the Federalists cannot use strength of arguments and substance, they lie, bully, steal, and bribe to achieve their aims. Centinel laments that the Postal Service is an effective tool for Federalist interceptions of mailings.

Centinel demonstrates beyond a reasonable doubt the lack of support for the Constitution among Pennsylvania's population. He enumerates examples. He has the goods and lays out the arithmetic. He points out the Federalists' use of false surveys.

Sadly, censorship and strong-arm tactics are depriving the population of facts about the new government.

Centinel signs off by proclaiming his pride in maintaining anonymity. Many attempts have been made to learn his true identity. He mentions Committees of Correspondence as a way of bypassing the Post Office. Despite smear tactics aimed at Centinel, he has no regrets about his work and hopes it will yield positive results.

A sad irony is that Anti-Federalists like Centinel - who are ignored today - had empathy toward their fellow citizens. The smooth-talking Founders worshipped today were but a mere shadow in comparison.

AFP17 - Anti-Federalist Papers - Part 17

In Letter No. 17, Centinel expands upon his previous essay. He takes direct aim at the Founders scamming their fellow Americans for millions of dollars. Well-to-do elites, acting as political saviors, are speculating using public monies.

Centinel displays amazing courage in this missive. He names names and levels charges.

Does Centinel make another tangential reference to Alexander Hamilton, who had a powerful influence over George Washington?

The Federalists are stealing supplies and property and are using their plunder to further their hold on power.

Centinel calls out Federalist Francis Hopkinson as a shill for
denigrating the Irish-born Anti-Federalist writer and educator, Benjamin Workman, aka Philadelphiensis. Centinel implies that Hopkinson, "The Little Fiddler," has debased himself by accepting bribes.

It's an unpopular claim in today's myth-loving, hero-worshiping America: The Founders were erudite grifters who pulled every trick out of the bag to swindle their fellow citizens out of their liberties and property.

Sadly, and ironically, Americans have been propagandized into believing they can’t be propagandized.

AFP16 - Anti-Federalist Papers - Part 16

In his letter No. 16, Centinel calls out the Founders for their latest skullduggery: They are writing off their debts to the Union - using the very language of the Constitution!

Through legislative gymnastics they are absolving themselves of their financial obligations.  By eliminating ex-post-facto laws that bind them to their fiduciary requirements, they are, in essence, shifting responsibility away from themselves and onto the new government and, by extension, their fellow citizens.

Centinel laments that while his own state of Pennsylvania has honored its debts, it will be taxed at the same levels as those states which have contributed little - or nothing - to the fledgling nation since the Revolution.

AFP15 - Anti-Federalist Papers - Part 15

In Letter no. 15, Centinel, with a sharp eye, is viewing the political landscape of Massachusetts.  He sees the false panic being ginned up by the Framers.  He is concerned that the people of that good state are willfully denying inclinations toward caution.

Centinel says ancient social instincts toward collective prudence are a bulwark of free peoples.  Centinel worries that those instincts are being forgotten because of hobgoblins conjured by the moneyed elites.  He points to Massachusetts' narrow approval of the Constitution as a barometer.  He mentions the recent rebellions that have occurred.  He avers that the "controlled media" have fomented unrest as another ploy to frighten the citizenry into approving the Constitution.  Centinel exhorts his fellow residents to be wary of impostors masquerading as friends.
